The challenge with shower niches
A shower niche is always a damp environment. Condensation forms on every surface and, over time, this moisture can collect in hidden areas. If lighting is enclosed inside a profile, the condensation can settle inside, leading to discolouration or even mould.
Why the HL-ALU009-2M profile is not ideal
The HL-ALU009-2M floor profile can technically be mounted facing down in a shower niche. However, the profile itself is not waterproof. It only becomes water-resistant if the installer seals the cover with silicone, seals every drilling, and closes the ends. Even then, the cover is designed to rely on silicone to stay in place. The installation must be tested dry first, because once it is sealed it cannot be adjusted. Despite this, condensation will still build up inside the profile sooner or later, which is why long-term maintenance and replacement must be expected.
A better approach
Instead of trapping moisture inside a profile, the simpler and more reliable solution is to avoid the profile completely. If the niche is tiled with a smooth, clean surface, an IP68 LED strip can be mounted directly. This prevents condensation from being trapped in an enclosure and makes future replacement much easier. Any installation in a wet area should always be planned with access in mind, as LED strips will need replacing at some point.
Suitable IP68 strip options
COB IP68 3000K (CRI90): https://www.hiline-lighting.co.uk/gb/cob-led-strips/987-cob-led-strip-ip68-3000k-cri90-528-leds-5060440717116.html
IP68 Warm White 2835/60: https://www.hiline-lighting.co.uk/gb/single-colour-led-strips/383-ip68-warm-white-led-strip-smd2835-60-5060440712869.html
Both strips are fully waterproof, rated IP68, and suitable for continuous use in wet areas — even underwater. If this is not the colour you need, we have many alternatives, so please just ask.
Important note for installers
All installations in wet areas must be carried out by a qualified professional. Cable sizing, voltage drop, load, and protection must be calculated for each project. Incorrect design or wiring can cause overheating or safety risks. Hi-Line Lighting supplies products only and does not provide installation consultancy.
