Case Study: Ice Room Lightbox Project with 2m Vertical Edge Lighting
This case study explores a custom installation for an ice room wall using edge-lit LED lightboxes, demonstrating how Hi-Line Lighting products deliver uniform, professional-grade illumination in humid environments like spas or saunas.
Project Overview
The project required edge-lighting for a series of wall-mounted translucent panels in an ice room. The client originally considered LED strips, but due to shadowing and performance issues in shallow lightboxes, we recommended switching to our specialised Osram-powered edge-lighting modules.
LED Module Configuration
Each vertical edge of the 2m-high lightboxes was fitted with:

7x HL-OEL006 (42cm, 15W per module)

1x HL-OEL005 (35cm, 12.5W per module)
This totals approximately 117.5W per 2m vertical run.
Modules are installed along one vertical edge only (single-sided lightbox). These modules are mounted on aluminium bars, which provide passive cooling and ease of installation.
Powering the System
We used:

4x HL-150W-24V-IP67-5Y Drivers
Each 150W driver powers 7x HL-OEL006 modules, mounted to one vertical edge.

2x HL-60W-24V-IP67-5Y Drivers
Used for powering the HL-OEL005 modules placed at the smaller vertical edges (approx. 350mm panels).
Accessories Used

24x HL-OEL-SBCR Barrel Connectors
Used to link the modules together end-to-end in a clean, compact line.

12x HL-3PMC-IP68-508 Waterproof Connector Boxes
Protect and extend the wiring at both input and output sides of the driver.

12x HL-OEL-PSU200 DC Male Connectors (5.5x2.1 AWG18)
Used for power input; 2 per module group to allow parallel feed from both ends where voltage drop is a concern.
Voltage Drop Management
In cases where 7x HL-OEL006 modules are linked in series, we suggest feeding the group from both ends in parallel. This minimises voltage drop, although the modules are internally regulated by IC chips and are still safe when powered from one end only.
Why These Modules Were Selected
The HL-OEL006 and HL-OEL005 modules are ideal for edge-lighting installations from 1m up to approx. 2.5–3m in height. This installation reached exactly 2m and demonstrated excellent brightness uniformity. These Osram-powered modules are also suitable for double-sided lightboxes when installed on both vertical edges. For lightboxes under 1m, we recommend the HL-OEL012 or HL-OEL024 cuttable series instead.
Conclusion
The outcome was a clean, powerful lighting solution that avoided strip-related shadowing issues and achieved a long-lasting result. This project is an ideal reference for spa designers, signage professionals, and sauna specialists looking for edge-lighting solutions.
